Energy Transition: Biomass Availability and Pelletisation Potential in the Southern US

Biomass pellets are a drop-in fuel which can be used to generate green electricity and power industrial boilers. They will become increasingly important as carbon emissions become priced or taxed around the world. However, sourcing sustainable biomass pellets is a challenge.

Our customer asked us to investigate biomass availability in Louisiana.

CZ Approach

We deployed our Miami consulting team to visit and interview sugar milling groups and other cane experts in the Louisiana.

The on-the-ground research was supplemented with our proprietary data to develop an understanding of biomass logistics, trade flows and costs in the South of the USA.

CZ Solution:

Delivered assessment of biomass availability in Louisiana.
Determined logistics costs from biomass suppliers to potential pellet plants via a range of transport routes and modes.

Client quote…In 2021, we traded over 2.4 million metric tonnes of VIVE-verified sugar, and at year end over 3.2 million metric tonnes of product was available, including bagasse and molasses.

Outlook

We continue to grow our biomass physical supply business alongside our biomass consulting activities.

There’s the potential for a new 350k tonne pellet plant in Louisiana, particularly with the introduction of carbon credit schemes globally and the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) incentives
