Our client was scoping a potential investment into fermentation assets. To inform this decision we identified and assessed the most promising sugar and sweetener markets around the world to serve as a foundation for the fermentation processes.

Sugar is consumed in every country in the world, however for developing countries sugar can be a sensitive political issue. Angola has been on the road to economic recovery since the end of the Civil War in 2002 and growth of its sugar industry has been part of the process.

The sweetener industry in the United States is heavily regulated. Recent changes the rules relating to Mexican sugar arrivals into the United States led to potential opportunities for regional sugar producers looking to place sugar into North America.

Our client's supply chain for glass bottles was a complex web of suppliers and bottlers spread across Europe, each with their own unique specifications for bottle colour, weight, and design.

India is one of the world’s largest sugar producers and aims to achieve a 20% ethanol blend in gasoline by 2025. To achieve this, the national E20 Ethanol Blending Programme (EBP) was introduced by the Indian government in 2003 and renewed in 2018 to encourage excess sugarcane and bagasse to be converted into ethanol for gasoline blending. However, recent drops in sugarcane harvest have made achieving the goal of a 20% blend of ethanol in gasoline by 2025 more challenging.

Brazil is one of the world’s largest cane growers. Mills can use this cane to make sugar for food or ethanol for use as a road fuel. Brazil’s economic growth has led to an increase in fuel consumption, requiring an increase in gasoline and anhydrous ethanol production and imports.

Gaining a deep understanding of a domestic sugar markets in remote geographies can be challenging and subject to quick and radical changes.

As carbon emissions are being increasingly priced around the world, many legacy coal-fired power stations are looking for alternative sustainable fuel sources. Biomass pellets represent a drop-in alternative but questions remain around its geographical availability.
